Further Artist Research 2

In the second artist research, I would like to explore the biography of Wilhelm Wagenfeld. He is a German industrial designer and was a student of Bauhaus school. He was born in Bremen, Germany. Initialy, he was trained to become a silversmith and draughsman in his late tens and early twenty. This helped him develop precise techniques and a deep understanding of materials and manufacturing procesess. In 1923, he studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, one of Europe's most influential art schools. It was through this learning environment that he was able to define the design style he desired (Iconic Interiors, n.d.).

While studying at the Bauhaus, Wagenfeld was instructed on how to arrange and simplify functions. The fact that this led him t believe that furniture should not only have beautiful design, but also be highly functional in everyday life. He often skipped unnecessary decorative details, instead focusing on clean forms, high quality materials, as well as high functionality (Iconic Interiors, n.d.).

One of the most famous his work is MT8 lamp. It was designed around 1923-1924, while he was studying at the Bauhaus and working with Carl Jakob Jucker. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum (1924), the lamp is made of glass and metal, and he designed it with a simple shape, using transparent materials so that the materials and the structure of the lamp could be clearly seen.

Furthermore, his intention in designing the MT8 lamps was to mass produce them. The Museum of Modern Art (1923-1924) emphasizes that the lamps were designed based on the Bauhaus and would be made with good but affordable materials to be accessible to easily access to users.

In my project, I would like to prioritize simplicity in furniture and decor, removing the complex details to make the room feel more spacious and relaxing. Therefore, through my research, I found the MT8 lamp quite suitable for my project. It has the basic shapes, like cylinders and hemispheres, so it perfectly matchs the minimalist and classic style that I'm aiming for in my design. Furthermore, the fact that it doesn't conceal the internal structures makes it appear more rustic. I can use this lamp in my living room because my sofa set is rectangular, so I want to add other decorations with different shapes to create a Bauhaus feel. In addition, the lamp's design has a classic style, so if I put it in the living room, it helps maintain a rustic as well as modern design.
